Speech Buddies

We got together with our buddies in Rm 7 a couple of times to help them prepare for the speech competition.

This is list tells you the order of people doing speeches next week. it will take 4 days to get through all the people in class. I can't wait to hear everyone's speeches.

This is our fitness time because it was raining we had to do it inside. We played the game called four corners. In this picture Isaac is counting down so all the others can get to a corner. Then he will say a number and if you are in that corner you will be out.

This week and last week we made our classroom into a debating chamber! Sarah G was the speaker and the rest of us were MPs. In this picture we are raising our hands to vote for a new law!

Last Friday we had an earthquake drill! We were supposed to duck down and cover our heads until the shaking stopped - but its kind of hard to know when to get up when the room isn't actually shaking. See the one little kid standing . hehe. . .

Woah Sarah! Good job at athletics winning the high jump! Well done to all the people who went. They did really well showing their skills!!

On Fridays we have jump jam after assembly. This is a picture of some of our jump jam leaders rocking out to car wash.

In week 5 we are doing speeches. So to prepare we had to write and present a 1 minute speech on any topic.

We are learning about elections and the crafty work of Lottie, Laura and Amber shows John Key and a small window.

Marriage Prezis

Netball

Hello!!

Recently our netball season came to an end L. Our team (the Sapphires (whoop whoop)) won our grade !! We did REALLY well, with a 31-1 win (to Queen Margaret’s), a 30-3 win (to Raroa) and a lot more games full of awesomeness!! We won absolutely ALL of our games, easily putting us in first place in our grade ! Well done the Sapphires.

Also, many, many, many, many, many thanks to our FANTASTIC coach, who really helped us progress through this season !!

Rugby World Cup Parade

The Rugby World Cup 2011 Parade happened at St Benedict’s on the 9^th of September. Each classroom represented a country participating in the world cup.

Room 1: Japan

Room 2: South Africa

Room 4: England

Room 6: Scotland

Room 7: Italy

Room 8: France

Room 9: Australia

Room 10: Samoa

Room 11: Ireland

Room 12: Wales

All the students dressed up in the colours of their country. After a parade around the playground, all of St.Benedict’s gathered in the library, where each class sang the national anthem of the country that they were assigned to. Finally, we all sung the New Zealand national anthem.

Lolly Necklaces

This year’s spring fair needs a lot of preparation so room 11 and 12 made around 100 lolly necklaces to sell the 2011 St Ben’s Spring Fair. The year 7 and 8s had to bring in at least 1 bag of lollies to make up the necklaces! On Tue 27th Sept we made the lolly necklaces which - even though the year 8s did it last year - were really hard to roll and tie. We all hope that we sell them all at the Spring Fair and raise lots of money for the school.

Snow Day!

16 August 2011 was the first time in 40 years that snow fell in Wellington city. 

We had sooooooooooooo much fun sabotaging our siblings, throwing snow balls at each other and building snow men. 

The snow lasted 3 days and it was piling up. Some of us could not even leave the house because it was too dangerous to drive. In some places the snow was even 10 inches deep!!!

 

Fortunately, school was cancelled for a day which gave us a day to play in the snow!!! ....…YAY!!!

But unfortunately the rain came and the snowy blanket got washed away =(

Lunchtime

For a bit less than an hour, we get to go outside and be free. Outside our small classrooms, we have no restrictions and we get to have some fresh air. Sometimes, it rains and the only option is to stay inside, only having a small pack of cards to entertain us with. The only game we are able to play is called Ps & As. This game activates George’s special power. This power enables him to lose every single game of cards we play, giving him a hard time. When it doesn’t rain, this makes people smile with glee as Zac owns an expensive, hardcore rugby ball that everyone enjoys playing with. Then after we have our amazing time outside they have an automatic 5 minute bell that indicates to us that our moment of freedom is out. We then have to be inside by the next bell 5 minutes later otherwise we receive harsh, tiring, consequences!

Masterchef

At the moment, our class has been partaking in Master Chef Challenges! We can either enter alone or with a partner, and each time we get a theme or a main ingredient to cook with. Last week, we had a Master Chef Challenge, and the theme was welshificationess! The winners were Olivia, Laura and Clara, who made delicious Welsh cakes! And, Amanda came second; with her awesome Welsh colours cake. Last Master Chef, we had a cook off – we had to make rice paper rolls under a time limit of 40 minutes, including clean-up! The winners were Daniel, Josh and Manfred, who made pork and lettuce rice paper rolls with secret ingredients – sweet chilli sauce!

Rugby World Cup

On the 9^th of September, the 2011 Rugby World Cup officially began and everyone in our class was superly-super psyched!! The opening ceremony was outstanding featuring the history of New Zealand. It was followed by the opening match between the All Blacks vs. Tonga. 

At our school, each class were given a country that was participating in the competition. Our class (the best class ever) was given the great country of Wales. We Welshified the classroom with paper chains using green, red and white paper. There is also a giant Welsh flag on the wall and ‘Wales’ in big letters on the windows with Welsh Dragons on either side. Some of the boys built a replica of a castle in Wales which was so awesome. Sadly, it was destroyed when we took it outside to show everyone in the school.

Scholarships

Recently, we Room 12 kids have been going for scholarships far and wide. From the cold shores of Evans Bay to the wild hills of Karori. Five of our students attempted the St Patrick's College Academic Scholarship Award a few weeks ago. Kate generously took our high achievers (no comment) to Kilbirnie for the three tests on their R.E, English and Mathematics skills. Our young boys (Hugh, David, Daniel, Zac and Finn) competed against 17 other pupils from various schools around Wellington. After the three tests had finished, they went to get McDonalds before returning to Nairnville for our Gym session. This week, Finn received the news that he had won the scholarship.

Lottie attempted the Samuel Marsden academic award, and after vigorous tests and an interview, she won the scholarship. However in the end she turned down the opportunity as she chose Wellington Girls College instead.

Congratulations Lottie Twyford and Finn Lowndes on their Scholarship achievements.

Loud Shirt Day

Recently on the 16^th of September, the whole school had a mufti day for the deaf. But there was a catch… you had to wear a loud shirt. On the day, the school was filled with bright and colourful shirts of all shapes and sizes. The people were also called to give a gold coin donation, and St. Benedict’s raised a great amount of money for the people who have to live their lives every day with hearing problems. All in all, it was a great success and everyone had fun showing off their vibrant shirts!

Police Visit

Last week, Constable Elizabeth Young helped out in our class for three days. On Friday she told us about some of the different roles of the Police. She showed us photos from her time helping out in Christchurch after the earthquake, and also showed us her uniform and some of her equipment.
