Science Fair info
Hi all - I forgot to hand out the Science Fair note today, so here it is in case you want to get started over the holidays:
Our school Science Fair will be held in Week 9 of Term 2. You may want to start thinking about your science fair topic during the holidays. You will need to tell us your topic early in Term 2.
Things to remember:
- choose a topic you are interested in
- make sure your investigation includes a question that you can answer by doing a test (not just research)
- there is lots of useful information about the Wellington Science Fair on the official website: www.sciencefair.org.nz
- check out the list of prizes on the website - it might help you think of a topic
- the top ten school projects will go through the the Wellington Science Fair
Here's a picture of Anastasia's winning project from last year to inspire you:
Try to avoid the situation below and don't leave it all til the last minute! Choose something achievable that you are actually interested in.

Ice-cream!
Yesterday we made ice-cream as part of our chemistry topic. We looked at changing state from liquid to solid. Most of the ice-cream worked out pretty well, though some ended up a bit salty because of leaking plastic bags. Can you guess from the photos who had salty ice-cream?

Weekly Tasks - Term 1, Week 11
Last week of term! Here are the tasks: Weekly Tasks - Term 1, Week 11.
It is a short week, so all your work needs to be finished by Thursday morning tea time.
Remember we are going to have a farewell party for Ben K on Thursday, so bring along some finger food to share.

Mission Fair
We held the annual Mission Fair on Thursday. All the Year 6, 7 & 8 students ran stalls for the rest of the school. As usual they did a great job of organising the stalls and managed to raise a record total of over $1900. This will go to Caritas to be used in Solomon Islands.

Weekly Tasks - Term 1, Week 10
Here is this week's sheet: Weekly Tasks - Term 1, Week 10.
Remember the Mission Fair is on Thursday - make sure your group is prepared.
The link to the art activity is here: Monster Art
Here's a link to the poem we want you use as a guide: Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
Remember you need to write one 4-line stanza about snowy woods, following the rhyme scheme of the first stanzas in this poem. It needs to have the same rhythm, so count the syllables and say your version out loud to see if it fits.

Chemistry
Last week the students had to devise a method of separating a mixture of salt and sand, using what they know about the physical properties of the two substances. This is part of a Science unit focusing changes of state. Most groups managed to come up with a method involving dissolving, filtering and evaporating.
