Science Fair 2019

Congratulations to all students for successfully completing your Science Fair projects at the end of Term 2. It was obvious how much work you had put into them.

The top ten projects will go on to the NIWA Wellington Science Fair. The winners were:

• 1^st Aminette - Y7 – What colour do cats and dogs prefer?  – What colour bowls will cats and dogs go to first for food?
• 2^nd George D. - Y7 – Structure – Which popsicle stick structure is the strongest?
• 3^rd Isaac  - Y7 – The Power of Soil – How suitable is Porirua’s soil for growing lettuce?

• Jacob - Y8 – Under Pressure – Will two objects come together if you blow air between them. How does airflow change air pressure between two objects? Testing Bernoulli’s principle.
• Sam J - Y8 – Positivity Leads to Success – Does positive reinforcement make a difference to performance when shooting penalty goals in football.
• Nina - Y8 – Test vs Test – Is the Libre diabetes sensor a good substitute for the finger pricking method in terms of accuracy?
• Anna - Y8 – Germs Germs Grow Away! – Testing household surfaces for different types of bacteria.
• Billy - Y8 – 5 Second rule – fact or fiction?  – If you drop food on the ground for a longer amount of time does it grow more germs?
• Carl - Y8 – Sun: are you enough?  – Does purifying water by solar distillation work well enough to support human survival?
• Charles - Y7 – Jack and the Beanstalk – What substrate is best for growing broad beans in?
