Panama

The Republic of Panama is the most southern country of Central America. The capital of Panama is Panama City which is situated on the coast of the country. Panama was settled by Spain in the 16^th century and was soon partnered with many of the surrounding countries. But the countries all split up. With only panama and Columbia remaining together… but not for long.

Separation from Spain

For the first 80 years after becoming part of Spain Panama was a voluntary department of Columbia. But luckily during the “thousand days of war” between 1899 and 1902 America decided to help out Panama. And by November 1903 they declared independence from Columbia.

The Canal

The famous Panama canal was made between panama and Columbia finally confirming their separation. It was built by the U.S army. An agreement was signed by the U.S and Panama before the end of the 20^th century saying that the canal was officially owned by panama
